Timing and speed of deployment are critical components of airbags in motor vehicles. An airbag that deploys too soon, too late or too forcefully in a car accident can result in severe and even fatal injuries.

• Early airbag deployment: In order to avoid suffocation of the accident victim, airbags are designed to deflate rapidly once deployed. However, when a defective airbag deploys too early, the airbag deflates too soon and does not protect the individual from crashing into the steering wheel, dashboard or windshield.
• Late airbag deployment: In a collision, the vehicle occupants are thrust forward at the speed the vehicle was traveling prior to the crash. If the airbag deploys too late, the occupant will have already traveled closer to the airbag, causing the airbag to explode forcefully into the occupant's face as it inflates. This amount of force can result in blindness or eye injuries, facial deformities and fatal injuries.
• Over-powerful airbag deployment: An airbag that is too powerful can cause more harm than good. If an auto manufacturer equips a vehicle with an over-powerful airbag, the manufacturer may be held responsible if the dangerous airbag caused serious injury or death.
